Dialectical Fluid is a combination of fluorochemicals and aqueous base fluids, enabling it to have properties which can be changed without being heated. It is used as the coolant fluid in wire EDM—a process where an electrical current passes through a wire electrode—to generate metal vapor that then solidifies on the tool’s surface, machining the material into its desired shape. Let’s explore in detail what it is and why it’s used in EDM wiring.
What is Dialectical Fluid?
Dialectical Fluid is a fluorochemical—a class of chemicals made of carbon and fluorine—which have been modified so that they can change properties without being heated. It is used as the coolant fluid in wire EDM—a process where an electrical current passes through a round wire electrode—to generate metal vapor that then solidifies on the tool’s surface, machining the material into the desired shape.
What are the properties of Dialectical Fluid?
Dialectical Fluid’s properties are defined by specific combinations of metallic salts, fluorocarbons, and high-purity water. As a result of the chemical combination of these compounds, its physical properties can be altered by adding or removing certain chemicals without changing the fluid’s temperature.
What is Dialectical Fluid Used For?
In the Wire EDM process, where an electrical current passes through a rod-shaped electrode against a piece of metal, Dialectical Fluid is used as the coolant fluid to rapidly remove heat from wires or tooling. The heat generated by the electrical current is transferred to the fluid, which then circulates through a cooling system. This method of transferring holes or “voids” in features provides an extremely high-precision surface finish; without Dialectical Fluid, it would be very difficult to achieve this level of precision.
Why use Dialectical Fluid in Wire EDM Machining?
Because it changes property without being heated, Dialectical Fluid can be used in an environment where temperatures cannot easily change; if the coolant were to change temperature during EDM, it could impact the quality of the machined hole/feature.
